Dear YOU, my favourite readers,
It's time to break the ice and dive into a dicey conversation brewing in the coaching world. I invite you to join me on a truth-telling journey as I unpack and explore the mesmerizing and sometimes treacherous realm of Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP). In the podcast episode I recently recorded with Maggie Patterson, I dared to speak up about my own experiences and discoveries regarding the potential dangers of NLP. It wasn't an easy decision, but I believe in being honest and transparent, especially regarding the well-being of those we serve.
Throughout my journey, I have learned valuable lessons and undergone personal growth.
I assure you that I have taken the necessary steps to recover and improve as a coach. With the help of professional guidance and mentorship, I have developed a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in my work. While NLP initially seemed like a powerful tool, enabling me to unlock profound insights and facilitate change, I gradually realized its limitations and potential hazards. Like skating on thin ice, it became clear that NLP can be dangerous and harmful. Quick fixes and temporary changes may offer immediate gratification but rarely achieve sustainable transformations. It's essential to understand that even well-meaning coaches can unknowingly fall into the traps of this practice. Rather than shaming anyone, myself included or making people feel bad; I intend to spark an open conversation about the risks associated with NLP. By acknowledging the dark corners of NLP's application, such as its association with groups like NXIVM or its misuse by pick-up artists and con artists, we can collectively strive for a safer coaching environment.
As a result of my journey, I made the conscious decision in 2013 to begin transitioning out of NLP in my coaching practice. After a decade of unpacking the nuances and problems, I can only talk about why that change was necessary for me to prioritize the well-being and safety of our clients above all else. Please listen to the podcast episode to gain a deeper insight into why and how I discovered what I needed to be to take responsible action.
Stay safe, stay curious, and I will be over here pushing the boundaries of being an exceptional coach. Work with me if you wanna.
